Save Skaneateles Lake

Skaneateles Lake faces an immediate crisis. Eurasian watermilfoil, an aggressively invasive aquatic plant, threatens to drastically and permanently change the character of the lake. Unchecked, the weed spreads quickly and forms large, dense mats of floating vegetation.

Red dots indicate areas of milfoil infestation. Blue dots show where patches were eradicated in 2007.

In 2007, supported by the donations of hundreds of local residents, the Skaneateles Lake Milfoil Eradication Project removed 4.2 acres of milfoil from the lake. Building on this success, the project continues, with a goal to eliminate 8 to 12 additional acres in 2008 and complete the project in 2009. Your contribution will make that possible.

Donate today

Eradicating milfoil is a demanding, labor-intensive and costly process. With six boats and thirty divers working through the summer, the operation is a major investment in the recreational and aesthetic value of the lake.

Approximately $600,000 has been raised through private donations, a NY State grant and grants from private foundations. An additional $500,000 will be required to complete the project. We seek to raise $300,000 in the summer and fall of 2008.

Your help is desperately needed to preserve Skaneateles as the sparkling jewel of the Finger Lakes. Your donation is greatly appreciated and completely tax-deductible.
