Save Skaneateles Lake

Skaneateles Lake faces an immediate crisis. Eurasian watermilfoil, an aggressively invasive aquatic plant, is threatening to drastically and permanently change thecharacter of the lake.

Red dots in the maps above represent patches of milfoil pressent in Skaneateles Lake. As you can see, the presence of milfoil has more than doubled over a period of five years.

Growing up to 25 feet in length, in large patches, milfoil has already overtaken large sections of the lake, and is spreading unchecked. Without a prompt and decisive intervention, the infestation will quickly reach a scale virtually impossible to reverse.

Fortunately, a practical and proven solution has been identified and, if adequately funded, can be implemented in the summer of 2007. It is called suction dredging. Every milfoil plant will be hand-pulled from the lake bottom, suctioned into collection boats, bagged, and removed from the lake.

Donate today

This will be an extremely demanding, labor-intensive and costly effort. Approximately $850,000 will be required to finance this three-year eradication initiative. Your help is desperately needed to pay for the equipment and labor necessary to preserve Skaneateles as the sparkling jewel of the Finger Lakes. Without sufficient funding, this program cannot succeed.

The Skaneateles Lake Eurasian Watermilfoil Eradication Foundation has applied for 501(c)(3) charitable status. The mission of the organization is to fund and oversee the milfoil removal effort. Your donation is completely tax-deductible.
